Although Serena Williams will wait until the National Bank Open in Toronto to start her 2022 US Open streak, the American has spent the last few days at the Citi Open in Washington, DC
With her sister Venus Williams taking part in the singles draw at the WTA250 event, the 23-time Grand Slam champion stopped by to train with her and even showed up to see her older sister in action at her opener. Unfortunately, the seven-time Grand Slam champion was unable to progress, falling 4-6 6-1 6-4 to Canada’s Rebecca Marino despite an impressive performance.
Venus Williams received plenty of praise from fans on social media for her performance that night, with many praising her for having the fire in her stomach to compete even at this age. Interestingly, they also noticed the presence of Serena Williams at the encounter.
Many users on Twitter were thrilled that the former world No. 1 was back on the WTA Tour as a regular, noting that appearing in tournaments she wasn’t competing in meant she was serious about her comeback.
The 40-year-old was also accompanied by her dog Christopher Chip Rafael Nadal, named after the 22-time Grand Slam champion from Spain. Upon seeing the familiar sight again, one fan explained that it was a sign that things would soon return to normal and Williams would be winning tournaments again in no time. The tweet read:
“Travel with her back to tournaments like in the golden days. All we need is Sascha and we will be holding trophies again in no time.”
Another fan noted that it was great to see the Williams sisters motivating each other on their comeback journeys and helping each other get back into rhythm, and tweeted:
“Yeah!!!!! I love it when Venus Williams and Serena Williams support each other. I’m so proud and happy for her.”
Here are some more reactions from fans:
Serena Williams will contest two WTA1000 events before coming to New York for the US Open
For her own comeback journey, Serena Williams has chosen to play two WTA1000 events – the National Bank Open in Toronto and the Western & Southern Open in Cincinnati – in preparation for the US Open later this month. At both events she will also be accompanied by her sister Venus Williams.
The 23-time Grand Slam champion’s run at Wimbledon ended prematurely after losing in three sets to Harmony Tan in her opening game. With more match practice, however, the American hopes to do better at Flushing Meadows in her quest for that elusive 24th Grand Slam.
