Cincinnati FC vs. Seattle Sounders FC Football Match Report – March 11, 2023

Der Brenner scored in the 63rd minute and FC Cincinnati overcame Seattle Sounders FC for the first time this season with a 1-0 win on Saturday night.

After another freebie from the Sounders on their own end, a skillful Cincinnati pass carried the ball to Brenner’s foot, whose low, side shot was deflected off the hand of an expanding Frei. It was his first goal of the season in the 63rd minute.

Cincinnati (2-0-1), aggressive for most of the game, found themselves in a precarious position about 20 minutes later when a serious foul resulted in a red card for defenseman Nick Hagglund. He was initially shown yellow, but the referee changed the booking.

Seattle (2-1-0) appeared to have leveled the game in the 90th minute. However, Yeimar Gomez’s successful header was taken off the board after a video review which showed a foul by Sounders in front of goal.

The FCC’s defense stayed strong enough to go unbeaten in three games to open a season for the first time in the franchise’s five-year MLS history.

Brenner’s strike was the first goal conceded by the Sounders in 2023, who beat Colorado and Real Salt Lake 6-0 at home to open the season.

A rather frenetic start gave way to an emotional stretch within the first 15 minutes.

The first real scoring opportunity of the game came from Seattle in the 16th minute. Jordan Morris rolled the ball off the wing but just wide of the open net, and Cincinnati goalie Roman Celentano was well outside his range.

Although FCC had 62.6 percent possession and were responsible for most of the sustained pressure, their four first-half shots resulted in just one shot on goal overall. The Sounders blocked two Cincinnati attempts before the break.

Seattle ended up with 12 total shots but only one on target.
