Collection of Chitty Chitty Bang Bang memorabilia to go under the hammer

A collection of items from the classic 1968 film Chitty Chitty Bang Bang will soon go under the hammer, it has been announced.

Organized by Excalibur Auctions, the auction offers fans the opportunity to purchase a memento of the popular family film.

Items for sale include a replica of Grandpa’s floating cabin, a children’s pedal car based on the famous flying vehicle, and sketches by the late artist Rowland Emett, who designed all of Caractacus Pott’s inventions.

The original film is based on the novel by James Bond author Ian Fleming and stars Dick Van Dyke, Sally Anne Howes and Lionel Jeffries.

A life-size wood, glass and metal model of the floating hut used as a backdrop to Grandpa Pott’s song Posh is one of the auction’s most valuable items, estimated at £3,500-4,500.

Emmett’s work includes an illustration for The Potts Cruft-de-Luxe Dog Tidy that appears in the film and bears Emett’s notes explaining how each part of the invention works.

The original work in ink and pencil is accompanied by a letter of provenance and is estimated at £2,500-3,000.

Rare Chitty Chitty Bang Bang children’s pedal car from the 1960s was manufactured by the Pines factory and is estimated at £1,000-1,500.

Molded from plastic and gold-colored, it features a metal grille and bumper and deployable wings, and is one of just 12 examples registered worldwide.

“We are delighted to offer such a special private collection of items, sourced directly from a source in the film,” said Excalibur Auctions’ Jonathan Torode.

“We’re sure there will be a lot of competition for these pieces from around the world as it is and remains such an iconic film that continues to delight generations to generations.

“While the low overall estimate for the collection is currently at a conservative £10,000, I think given the film’s continued popularity it may well surpass that.”

The auction – Movie, TV & Music Posters & Memorabilia – will take place on Saturday 13th August 2022.
