College Students Miraculously Survive Attack in Wyoming Mountains

Last week, a group of collegiate wrestlers from nearby Northwest College outside of Cody, Wyoming encountered a grizzly bear.

When the bear charged, a brave student fought back. Although two of the young men were injured, the teammates miraculously emerged from the ordeal alive.

Brady Lowry, Kendell Cummings, Orrin Jackson and August Harrison were out antler hunting on Saturday after an early morning practice session, KTWO-AM reported.

As the group returned to their car, Lowry and Cummings decided to part ways with the other two to continue searching for antlers, according to KSL-TV.

Soon they encountered signs of a bear.

“I was seeing bear shit all over the place and I looked at Kenny and I was like, ‘Here’s a grizzly bear,'” Lowry told KSL. “And right after I said that, the bear came out of the willows. It was fat. It came at me and attacked me and grabbed me off this cliff in this ravine and went at me a little bit.”

As the bear lunged at Lowry, it grabbed his arm and broke it.

“It shook me and I didn’t know what to do. … I curled up in a ball and it got me a few more times,” he said.

Cummings took action. He started yelling at the bear to get his attention.

Eventually, Cummings began kicking the bear and grabbing his hair until he turned away from Lowry and instead started chasing after him.

“It grabbed me, chewed me up a bit, and when it was done, it wandered away and I started calling Brady to make sure he was okay,” Cummings said.

However, the bear wasn’t done with Cummings. It came back while Lowry was away trying to find her teammates.

“The bear circled around again and it got me again, chewing on me, and then it got my head and cheek. And then for some reason it went away,” Cummings said.

Lowry, Jackson and Harrison found Cummings in rough shape.

“He was just soaked in blood that was pouring down the hill all over the place. Me and Orrin took turns wearing it,” Harrison told Fox News.

The students had called 911, and first responders soon arrived. Cummings was airlifted to a hospital, and both he and Lowry eventually ended up at a trauma center in Billings, Montana.

The Cowboy State Daily reported that both students required multiple surgeries for their injuries.

Cummings needed 60 staples in his head and suffered severe lacerations to his face, left arm and left leg. He required cosmetic surgery on his face and stitches on his right hand and leg.

Along with his broken arm, Lowry had lacerations to his back, shoulders and right leg.

KSL’s Shara Park spoke to Lowry and Cummings and tweeted pictures of the teammates in hospital.

“The young men say they’re alive today because of their teammates,” Park said.

“I can’t express how grateful I am for that [Cummings]. I don’t know what I’m going to repay him, I don’t know. I owe him everything,” Lowry told Cowboy State Daily.

When Lowry’s father, Dallas Lowry, went to the hospital to see his son, he found the rest of the wrestling team already there.

He told Cowboy State Daily how much the teammates mean to each other and how grateful they all are to Cummings for saving Lowry’s life.

“In collegiate athletics, these guys become men and they adopt these brothers who they never leave. They’ll remember those things for the rest of their lives,” said Dallas Lowry, who is also a wrestling coach.

Northwest College wrestling coach Jim Ziegler told Fox that both Lowry and Cummings are expected to make full recoveries.

Northwest College created a fundraiser to help pay the wrestlers’ medical bills.
