Colorado Mule Deer Bucks Tumble Down A Cliff In Wild Rut Brawl

I love me a good rut match.

It seems crazy to think about. These deer can live in complete harmony for three quarters of their year, maybe even side by side, then out of nowhere the winds twist and they sometimes fight to the death over a doe.

It shows the true colors of nature. It breaks it down into its rawest form. These animals really only care about a few things; food and reproduction.

And it kind of reflects human nature… have you ever seen a bunch of college boys fistfight at a Taco Bell at 2am after the bars have closed?

This is nothing more than sexual frustration… a group of bloated, testosterone-fueled males of the species, angry that their mating calls went unanswered at the bar they just left. Or maybe they’re trying to impress the single women who line up for a Cheesy Gordita Crunch with their drunken dominance.

Ok, maybe it’s not the same, but as a wise man once said:

“You and I, baby, are nothing but mammals, so let’s do it like we did on the Discovery Channel…”

I digress…

Mule deer are a popular favorite of hunters across North America. Not only do they taste great, but in their mature years they have picture-perfect antlers.

They are a large deer, with males averaging around 200 pounds and females slightly smaller. They have a large range, stretching from western Canada through the western half of the United States down to Mexico…making them popular in many areas across the continent

It’s always great to see a muley, it’s even better to see them do what muleys do.

This boy stumbled upon something many people only dream of. A big old Muley fight near Rifle, Colorado.

Mule deer fight each year when they are in the rut to show their dominance and to deter other bucks from their females. This is essential for them to be able to breed and pass on their genetics.

The bigger the deer, the more likely they are to win. This is also for the best for the population as the large and older deer generally have better genetics that allow them to grow like this.

These two big bucks are running head to head on a hill. They have a good fight as the bigger one gains some ground and starts pushing the other back.

In the heat of the moment, the two don’t really think about their surroundings when one pushes the other right off a small cliff. The pair collapse and continue fighting until the flat ground is hit again.

The smaller one obviously doesn’t like the fall and risk of combat when taking off in the opposite direction.

What a struggle to witness… it’s a wild world out there. Colorado Mule Deer Bucks Tumble Down A Cliff In Wild Rut Brawl
