ROCHESTER, NY – There’s no place like home except maybe Oak Hill, according to Corey Conners. After a great opening round at the PGA Championship, the Canadian was asked what type of golf course he would build to best suit his golf game.

“Really something like that,” Conners said after firing a three-under 67 shot. “I’ve been looking forward to coming here to Oak Hill for a while. It just has a bit of Canadian flair, like playing at home. I know the grass Narrow fairways, deep rough, small greens. That’s what you have here.”

There was a lot more that made him feel at home on Thursday, starting with a nearly two-hour freeze delay. What’s more Canadian than that?

“The temperatures went up really quickly today, but I’d say I definitely have a lot of experience playing in cold weather as a kid in Canada,” he said.

Advantage Conners maybe? Surely nobody loves to play golf in a tuque and warm their hands with a coffee like Canada’s top golfer.

“I wouldn’t say I enjoy playing in cooler conditions more than anyone else.” Wow, now. A way to throw cold water on the narrative, right? “I’m certainly not afraid of it, but I prefer it when it’s warm and sunny.” There you have it, Canadians aren’t afraid of anything.

Oak Hill is located in Rochester, NY, a three-hour drive from Toronto and four hours from Conners’ hometown of Listowel.

“Lots of Canadian cheers,” Conners said of the fan support during his first round. “Being so close to the Canadian border I think a lot of fans came. It was very special for me to have so much support out there.”

In 2016, Conners relocated to Palm Beach County, Florida but is still based in Canada.

“I now live in Florida with the turf of Bermuda and play PGA Tour events that don’t have a lot of rough. It’s good to come back and see some trees form the holes,” he said.
