Jill McDonald, Managing Director of Costa Coffee said: “After 50 years of celebrating some of the most entertaining books written by extremely talented authors from across the UK and Ireland, Costa Coffee has made the difficult decision to close the Costa Book Awards break up.
“This means that the 2021 Costa Book Awards, held in February 2022, was our 50th and final award.”
She added: “We are incredibly proud to have played a role in supporting some of the best-selling authors of the last 50 years, as well as groundbreaking, diverse and fresh voices that explore a wide range of subjects and ideas, from fiction to towards poetry and biography.
“We are honored to have helped bring both these new and established talents to a wider readership.”
The decision means the final winner of Costa Book of the Year for February 2022 was Hannah Lowe for her poetry collection The Kids. Her victory came 51 years after Geoffrey Hill won Best Book of Poetry for Mercian Hymns.
Gerda Charles’ novel The Destiny Waltz and Michael Meyer’s biography of Henrik Ibsen also received awards at the first award ceremony in 1971.
