dr Griffin also warned that the Omicron variant currently prevalent in the UK, known as BA.5, is able to bypass the body’s natural immunity, making it much more likely to be reinfected.
“Omicron is extremely good at bypassing our antibody immunity. There is evidence that the virus may also avoid our T cells,” he added.
“It’s quite worrying, so we need to keep an eye on it. We cannot predict how this virus will change, we can deal with it fairly easily.”
“The other thing about omicron is that the subvariants are just as pronounced, and the historical changes between the worrisome variants are even more significant. So all these subvariants are of concern to the WHO, so we shouldn’t ignore that.”
The Telegraph announced yesterday that children in several schools have been asked to start wearing face masks again after rising Covid-related staff absences.
West Yorkshire’s Heckmondwike Grammar School, a state special school for 11-18 year olds, wrote to parents urging students to use masks following a “sharp spike” in infections, The Telegraph has learned.
In his letter, Headmaster Peter Roberts said more than 10 per cent of the school’s teaching staff are currently ill. “We strongly encourage students and staff to wear a face covering while inside the school building,” he wrote.
“While we are not making it mandatory at this time, we would greatly appreciate your support to try to prevent further escalation of infections with the possible consequence of further mitigating measures.”
