Medvedev advances to Indian Wells semifinals
It was a noisy but successful trek to the semifinals for Medvedev, who had been struggling with the slowness of the courts all week and even screwed up a fingernail sliding on it.
He also avoided a potentially awkward situation when he twisted an ankle during his match against Alexander Zverev. In the end, the ankle of the player who said it is almost never glued was heavily glued. And it turned out to be more of a horror on the spot as he beat Zverev in three hours and 17 minutes.

Medvedev was hoping to play his next game, a quarterfinal against 23rd seed Alejandro Davidovich Fokina on Wednesday. And he defeated him in two tight sets, even if it was a little iffy in the beginning.
His movement has generally looked good; his contempt for the courts is chronic.

Tiafoe the last American
If you wanted to bet on who would be the last surviving American player in the Indian Wells men’s singles, you would probably have picked defending champion Taylor Fritz.
But Fritz went to a revived Jannik Sinner. And Tiafoe, who held a sweet draw against Marcos Giron, Jason Kubler and qualifier Alejandro Tabilo, had a gem to show off in the quarters against another former champion, 2020 winner Cameron Norrie.
The keys were a good hit rate on his own second serve (56%) and a good hit on Norrie’s second serve (59%).
Tiafoe’s effectiveness at net also paid off, going 12-for-15.

But for Tiafoe, Medvedev is on a different level than anyone he’s played against in Indian Wells, or all season for that matter. The only top 15 player he has faced so far in 2023 was Fritz in Acapulco a few weeks ago. And he lost in straight sets.

But considering how much trouble he’s having with it, it could be the most satisfying win of his career so far. (Okay, apart from winning the US Open).
