With musical guest Black Star and performers I NwodimChappelle easily made fun of him Saturday night live‘s decision to host the comedian. A confused Nwodim asks a smoking Chapelle, “Wait, are we doing this live?” and Chappelle replies, “Of course.” She then asks, “With you?” to which the comedian replies, “Obviously.” Nwodim then asks, everyone’s concern: “In this news cycle?” After a short pause, a slightly worried-looking Chappelle confirms, and Nwodim pointedly replies: “Interesting.”

Chappelle has repeatedly drawn criticism for what many find confusing when it comes to including transphobic material in his stand-up. Last year, Chappelle instigated a strike at Netflix over his comments about the trans community in his 2021 Netflix special. The nearer. In the special, Chappelle joked that he was “Team TERF,” which is short for “trans-exclusionary radical feminist,” and said, “Gender is a fact. Every human being in this room, every human being on earth, had to walk through a woman’s legs to be on earth. That’s a fact.”

Chappelle’s hosting stint has been reported to have caused some trouble for the long-running comedy show. Page Six reported on it SNL Staffers may have boycotted this week’s episode due to Chappelle’s presence, but no boycott has been confirmed. SNL writer celeste yim, who uses she/she pronouns, reportedly posted an Instagram story that appeared to be related to Chappelle’s hosting stint. “I’m trans and non-binary. I use she/them pronouns. Transphobia is murder and should be condemned,” Yim’s message read, according to a screenshot posted to Reddit. The thread has since been blocked by moderators of the site. This year, Saturday night live hired his first non-binary performer, Molly Kearney. Kearney has yet to publicly address the controversy.

Chappelle’s reps told CNN that there was no boycott and things were going smoothly at Studio 8H. “We have seen nothing to support media reports of a writer’s boycott,” Chappelle’s spokesman said. “In fact, the authors provided over 40 sketches for Dave’s reflections and collaboration. Just like Dave’s past ‘SNL’ appearances, you won’t want to miss it!”

Representatives from NBC and Dave Chappelle did not immediately respond vanity fair‘s request for comment.
