David Moyes praises West Ham’s ‘professional work’ as they advance in Europe
David Moyes hailed a “professional job” from West Ham United after they swept past AEK Larnaca to reach the Europa Conference League quarter-finals.
Goals from Gianluca Scamacca, Jarrod Bowen and teenager Divin Mubama secured a 4-0 win that night and a 6-0 aggregate win, making it a perfect 10 wins from 10 in the competition.
“We did a really professional job,” Moyes said. “It was always a risky game and if they conceded a goal maybe we would worry a little bit.
“It’s really gratifying. That doesn’t always happen, two quarter-finals in two years in Europe.
“We’ve had some great trips and played in some brilliant stadiums. It was great for the club, the staff and the players.”
Italy striker Scamacca’s battered finish got the ball rolling days after Moyes criticized his work performance.
“He did well,” added Moyes. “The goal was a bit lucky but he needs goals for confidence.
“He’s a really good boy and did a lot of good things tonight. Hopefully it gets him further.”
After Cypriot club Larnaca were reduced to 10 men when Gustavo Ledes was sent off for a foul on Pablo Fornals, Bowen scored two quick goals to put the tie well and truly out of reach.
“It is really important. Jarrod was a big player for us and tonight he scored a couple of goals so it’s really good for him,” added Moyes.
Local hero Mubama, 18, added the icing on the cake with 25 minutes from time with a deft flick to score his first professional goal.
“There’s nothing more satisfying than giving young players a chance,” said Moyes.
“It’s a really difficult road, especially in the Premier League, but tonight the result gave us a chance.
“He runs and he gets the job done and doesn’t think twice about his effort. He did really well.”
The defeat ended Larnaca’s European odyssey in which they also played in the Champions League and Europa League that season.
Boss Jose Luis Oltra said: “I’m very proud of my team, my players and the fans. But I’m not happy. I asked the players to compete.”
