David Schonback emerged with the win at the World Series of Poker Circuit Main Event on March 6th at the Horseshoe Casino in Hammond, Indiana on the outskirts of Chicago. The Geneva, Illinois resident took home the grand prize worth $282,725 and his second gold ring this week. “It’s a pretty great feeling, to be honest,” Schonbäck said WSOP circuit Reporter after the win. He continued, “Winning two rings in one week isn’t so bad.”
He also won the $400 No-Limit Hold’em Monster Stack event a few days ago and won another $52,756. His career earnings from this tournament series now total $412,975. Schonback now also holds 1,325 card player Player of the Year points and he has cracked the top 50 at number 45 in the current POY placements.
The $1,700 buy-in No-Limit Hold’em tournament had a prize pool worth $1,655,895 thanks to two starting flights with a total of 1,093 entries. There were only 102 who returned on day two of the tournament and the field was down to the last ten players after 10 hours of play on day 2 ahead of Monday’s final day of play.
As the final day began, Schonback was in the midfield in chips, and he eliminated a few opponents to move up to second place with six players in chips. He held the chip lead when 3-hand action broke out at the final table, and then the 3-hand game turned into a drawn-out battle that lasted beyond a dinner break. Schonback had lost the chip lead somewhat during this stretch, but he defeated Laid Hyso in third place and went into the finals with a 17.5 million chip lead against Eddie Blumenthal’s 15,290,000.
The final match only took an hour to determine the winner as Schonback steadily increased his lead right up until the final hand. In that final hand, Schonback opened with a raise and held 99
