Vulnerable Democratic MP Angie Craig (MN) has tried to hide her anti-law enforcement history by recently reversing her stance on lifting qualified immunity for police officers ahead of a tough re-election campaign.
The Minneapolis Star Tribune reported this month that Craig, who will face Republican Tyler Kistner in November, is trying to reverse some of her previous positions after she voted for anti-law enforcement legislation to remove qualified immunity for cops and disappoint the police force.
Craig told that Star Tribune that her “thinking has evolved” since she voted in favor of the anti-prosecution bill.
“Knowing what I know now and how attacks on law enforcement have had a negative impact on attitude and retention and morale and how those factors are affecting public safety efforts,” Craig added. “I think qualified immunity must remain in place for our law enforcement officers.”
Last year, Craig co-sponsored and voted HR 1280, the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act of 2021, which would effectively “disappoint the police” if enshrined in the law by costing hundreds of millions of dollars each year restrictions on enact police practices and remove safeguards for law enforcement. Republicans described the bill as a plan to “disappoint the police.”
Craig even voted against condemning calls to defund the police.
The Democrats wanted to use the bill in their anti-police ballot spree last year to abolish qualified immunity for criminal prosecution. The International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP) stated that “qualified immunity is an essential part of policing” and its removal “would have a profoundly deterrent effect on police officers and limit their ability and willingness to approach critical incidents without hesitation react. ”
A Congressional Budget Office (CBO) analysis of the bill at the time found that the bill would cost more than 18,000 police departments across the country significant amounts of money. “More than 18,000 law enforcement agencies across the country would be affected by the requirements of the bill,” the CBO said in a letter to senior Republicans in Congress.
In fact, the Minnesota Police and Peace Officers Association (MPPOA) — the Craig announced on Tuesday, she endorsed — according to her spokeswoman Leslie Rosedahl, she even lobbied the state’s congressional delegation to oppose the federally qualified immunity change.
In November 2021, Craig also traveled to Los Angeles to fundraise with the Heart of LA Democratic Club, a far-left group that has repeatedly backed calls for police defunding. However, the Heart of LA Democratic Club isn’t the only group supporting Craig and supporting police department defunding.
The congresswoman has a history of radically defunding police groups in the past, taking tens of thousands of dollars from groups like Planned Parenthood, the Sierra Club, NARAL and Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s Pro-Defunding the Police Super PAC, which reportedly has a “litmus test” in which candidates seeking their endorsement must promise they would “cut the annual law enforcement budget.”
Additionally, the Washington Free Beacon reported in February that Craig’s top aide, Liz Young, supported the move to defund the police force in June 2020 tweet while also writing, “fund consultants, not cops”:
Liz Young, Rep. Angie Craig’s district superintendent, backed the move to defund police in a June 2020 tweet, in which she writes that cities should “fund advisers, not police officers”. On the same day, Young shared a report of deaths involving police in New York caption “Burn. It. All. Down.” She later downplayed the literal burning down of a Minneapolis police station. to quarrel that if the station were replaced with a health clinic or library, “it would do infinitely more good.” young too encouraged her supporters to contribute to the Minnesota Freedom Fund, a radical nonprofit that supports police defunding and frees heinous criminals, including a suspected child rapist and an accused domestic abuser who was arrested for murder just weeks after his release .
With all of this, Mike Berg, a spokesman for the National Republican Congressional Committee (NRCC), slammed Craig’s law enforcement record, telling Breitbart News, “No matter how hard Angie Craig tries, she cannot hide her anti-law enforcement record.” Angie Craig will always side with the anti-police radicals when it counts.”
The Minnesota Police and Peace Officers Association did not respond to a request for comment from Breitbart News.
