Derry man pleads guilty to child abuse charges at Coleraine Crown Court

The PSNI has welcomed a guilty plea to child abuse charges at Coleraine Crown Court by a 53-year-old Derry man.

eter Anthony McGowan pleaded guilty to a total of 10 charges, including sexual communication with a child and possession of indecent and prohibited images of children.

Detective Inspector Richard Vasey, of the Police Service of Northern Ireland’s Child Internet Protection Team, said McGowan’s online behavior triggered intelligence systems which provided for a referral to the police, leading to officers conducting a search of his property.

He added: “The search resulted in a number of electronic devices being seized for forensic examination, McGowan was arrested and later charged with child molestation.

“Our message is clear: when a person downloads, views or creates indecent images of children, they leave a digital footprint and we actively look for you. We will continue to do everything in our power to ensure the safety of the children.

“We have dedicated officers on the Child Internet Protection Team dedicated to investigating these crimes, bringing those responsible to justice and ultimately protecting more vulnerable young people from unimaginable suffering.

“We will continue to proactively target those in our community who are contributing to this cycle of abuse and I would encourage anyone with concerns or information to contact us on 101 or 999 in the event of an emergency. We will act on the information received.” Derry man pleads guilty to child abuse charges at Coleraine Crown Court
