Something very strange and unexpected happened when Max Scherzer was about to serve in the game against the Atlanta Braves last night. As he was about to throw the ball, one of the New York Mets Ballboys ran over the backstop and disrupted the field.
As almost every MLB fan knows, Scherzer is one of the craziest players in the league. He doesn’t like anything that interferes with his pitching pace, and the ball boy definitely did.
As soon as Major League Baseball fans saw this, they immediately speculated what would happen to the ball boy.
Some have been confused as to whether this is a bar or not. Since nobody was on the base paths, this does not count as a ban. However, it could also have been classified as an illegal pitch, since Scherzer did not proceed with his application. Since the ball boy was an underdog factor, it’s likely the ref just ruled a no pitch.
That didn’t stop Scherzer from delivering a great game last night. Scherzer kept the Atlanta Braves scoreless in seven innings and had 11 hits. He gave up just four hits, scoring his eighth win on the mound that year.
Despite picking up injuries mid-year, Max Scherzer has been absolutely dominant this season. He really helped make the Mets’ pitching rotation one of the best in MLB.
At 38, Max Scherzer is still an elite pitcher
Just 11 days ago, Max Scherzer celebrated his 38th birthday and he’s still as good as ever. After 15 starts with the Mets this season, Scherzer is 8-2 with just a 1.98 ERA and a ridiculously low .899 WHIP. He also has 120 strikeouts in 95.2 innings this season. If he hadn’t been sidelined by an injury for two months, he would be in the running for the National League Cy Young Award.
He was part of an elite Mets team that season. The New York Mets currently have a 69-39 record leading the NL East. They’re 5.5 games ahead of the Atlanta Braves and looking like a shoo-in for this year’s playoffs. If the Mets continue like this, they could become world champions this year.
