Did the Archbishop Shade Harry and Megan in Queen’s Funeral Sermon While Looking Directly at Them?

As the formal procedures surrounding the death and funeral of Queen Elizabeth II have shed a harsh light on the unrest and divisions within the British royal family, the late monarch’s funeral on Monday itself and the Archbishop of Canterbury’s comments could be a rare rebuke revealed by the religious leader.

Archbishop Justin Welby delivered a short sermon at the Queen’s state funeral on Monday, in which he made a few comments characterized as “shadow”.

Welby told the nation in his sermon, “People who serve lovingly are rare in any walk of life. Leaders of loving service are even rarer. But in any case, those who serve will be loved and remembered when those who hold onto power and privilege are long forgotten.”

The New York Post reported, ” Footage of the sermon appears to show him staring intently at the part of Westminster Abbey where Harry and his wife sat behind Harry’s father, King Charles III.”

Other royal observers have described the comments as criticism aimed at either Prince Harry and Meghan, the Duchess of Sussex, or former Prime Minister Boris Johnson, depending on the commenter’s policies.

According to British publication The Mirror, several Twitter users have put forward different theories. One user wrote: “Is it me or has the Archbishop of Canterbury just attacked Boris Johnson in his address at the Abbey?”

Phantom Power, a Scottish nationalist YouTube channel, presented edited footage that shattered a shot of Johnson making the remarks.

Do Harry and Meghan deserve a second row seat at the Queen’s funeral?

However, careful examination of footage from multiple sources including Sky News and the BBC showed that Welby was looking significantly to the left, towards the royal family, and not towards Johnson, who sits further to the archbishop’s right.

Some commentators have suggested that Welby addressed his statement to the many world leaders who were present at the funeral and even some, like Russian President Vladimir Putin, the Mirror reported, who were not.

MSNBC’s Natasha Noman even hinted that the Anglican leader was condemning “people like Trump”.

While it’s incredibly easy to ascribe Welby’s stern words to anyone one’s socio-political ax requires sharpening, Archbishop Justin Welby was looking to his left, at that moment, there in Westminster Abbey, surrounded by the UK’s most powerful men and women of the royal family, saying, “Those who cling to power and privilege will be long forgotten.”

In Welby’s line of sight sat King Charles III, to whom he had recently complimented: “I know that His Majesty shares the same faith and hope in Jesus Christ as his mother; the same sense of service and duty.”

Directly behind him sat Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, the Duchess of Sussex, who had publicly and verbally scorned the royal family and monarchy, causing them great argument and embarrassment.
