Diplo officially releases “Wasted” with Koe Wetzel and Kodak Black, along with a music video

What a trio…

After a long fuss “Wasted” is officially available everywhere and features the surprising combination of EDM/pop producer Diplo, rapper Kodak Black and none other than the Texan rock star Kö Wetzel.

We actually got the first hint that this could happen again March 2022and then the trio posted videos of everyone hanging out in Miami Filming for the music video in August.

Koe later confirmed that it was indeed coming Whiskey Riff Raff Podcastand since then it’s just been a waiting game as to when we’d finally hear it.

Diplo took to Instagram to share a little about his inspiration behind the song and said he plans to go back to the country after his Diplo presents Thomas Wesley, Chapter 1: Snake Oil Album in 2020 that featured the 5x platinum song featuring Morgan Wallen called “Heartless”:

“I released a country album almost 3 years ago and it has become one of my most streamed projects of all time. I had to shut down Stagecoach, I did a song with @thomasrhettakins and @thuggerthugger1 (on the same song), a 5x platinum song with @morganwallen, and learned rope fights.

I wanted to start again, but I needed to tap into something that felt raw and crazy. It started in Miami where I wrote a few songs with @kodakblack and he had his rock star vibe. He sang this song while pounding a beat on his chest. I just followed it like that on the iPhone.

I took it home and built wasted beat. Then I teamed up with one of my favorite Texas rock stars in the world @koewetzelmusic down in Denton, Texas and we turned that song into a masterpiece. We drove to the Everglades and shot this video…

it’s Texas meets Florida and the first song of the next chapter by Thomas Wesley.”

Diplo mentions that “Wasted” was co-written by him with Kodak Black in Miami while Kodak was “in its rock star vibe,” so now I see why it seemed like a natural fit to include Koe as well:

Here’s a little bit of the song’s origin story from Koe’s perspective:

“Diplo turned me on, a song he was… he just wanted to work together. And then he kind of met me, and he had a bunch of different artists that he sent me, and he sent me this Kodak track.

And I just told him, you know, none of this is really going the way I want to kick the music out.

So Koe had planned to pretty much say thank you, but no thanks, and keep the idea in mind for something else in the future…

“And I was just about to tell him how legitimate, me and Dre are on the plane coming back and I’m listening to everything and he’s kind of been waiting for an answer.

And I was like, ‘Man, I think I’ll just do my own thing. And we will work together, let’s cook something one day.”

That night he sent me a track from Kodak and said, ‘What do you think about that? That’s more your style.’”

With some added bass drum and guitar, the new song seemed a lot more in tune with Koe’s musical style, and he ended up loving it:

“He threw in some drums, a small guitar and a bass drum. I thought, ‘Oh damn, yes.’ So we gave it to Kimball, we kind of worked it up, and then we went to New York and did some stuff with it.

It’s a rock ‘n’ roll song, honest man. I’m excited. Everyone we showed it to really loved it. Ready to bring it out.”

In terms of content and lyrics, Koe’s verses and lyrics definitely fit right into his wheelhouse style:

“Noticing that everyone is a part of my thoughts
Mask the pain with ketamine and wine
I am sad and happy at the same time
I think I’ve found my new best friend
The gun on the counter is staring at me
I threw away the bullets and gave them away
Because life is so much sweeter when you taste it
Bring me back to life when I’m done.”

I feel like this is the embodiment of all those “when you shuffle the playlist” memes, and while the song certainly won’t be for everyone, I just think it’s cool to see three such different artists working together and try something new .

The collaboration promises to be huge for each artist and of course will expose all three of them to a whole new fanbase, which is pretty damn cool.

Also, from what I’ve heard recently from Diplo, it sounds like this is just the beginning of his work with artists in the country world, so stay tuned.

And the moment we’ve all been waiting for… you can check out the song and video here, it’s really something else:
