If you’re looking to improve your smartphone cinematography, you might want to check out the new DJI OM 6.
DJI may be best known for producing some of the best drones out there, like the DJI Mini 3 Pro and the DJI Mavic 3, but it also produces other great camera gizmos, like the Osmo Mobile (OM) smartphone gimbals .
Just like the DJI OM 4 and DJI OM 5 before it, the DJI OM 6 (opens in new tab) is practically a high-end selfie stick if we want to reduce. But it offers more than just the ability to keep your phone at a distance. It also features 3-axis stabilization to keep your shots steady, Active Track 5.0 to keep your subjects centered even when they’re moving, and multiple gimbal and shooting modes to help you get the shots you want relatively easy to do.
Additionally, the DJI OM 6 comes with supporting software in the form of DJI’s Mimo gimbal app for smartphones – we’re fans of this app, which offers a variety of tools and nifty tutorials that make it the perfect companion for both seasoned veterans and veterans alike also for newcomers in the field of videography.
While we haven’t had a chance to try the DJI OM 6, sonically, it takes everything we loved about the OM 5 and refines the experience to make it even better.
Among the improvements, the OM 6 appears to have a more ergonomic design, with new controls on the handle that should help eliminate the occasional fiddling found on the older models. The new status panel also makes checking your current gimbal mode more convenient.
We’ve found the DJI OM 5 to be a versatile piece of kit, capable of supporting many of the best camera phones regardless of size, and the new OM 6 promises to be even better at holding big phones, even when in a pocket . It also retains the sleek design of the OM 5, although much like its predecessor, the DJI OM 6 may not be liked by those of you looking for a more traditional gimbal.
However, from what we’ve seen so far, the OM 6 doesn’t seem to offer much new. So if you have the OM 5, you probably don’t have a compelling reason to upgrade – we’ll know more when we have had the chance to try the DJI OM 6 for ourselves.
But if the DJI OM 6 already sounds like the exact gadget you need, then you’ll be glad to know you can buy one now from DJI’s online store for $159 / £145 (around AU$240). Along with the souped-up selfie stick, you also get a magnetic clamp, tripod, power cord, and storage pouch.
