Is healthcare in Jersey free for UK citizens?

Jersey and the UK agreed on a Reciprocal Health Agreement (RHA) which allowed UK citizens to receive cheaper healthcare while in Jersey.

The Jersey Government website states that “you don’t have to pay certain healthcare costs”.

It also adds that you’re only covered if your stay in Jersey is less than three months “and you don’t intend to move permanently to another country”.

The costs you have to bear are:

  • GP treatment
  • recipes
  • some kinds of medical devices and supplies
  • certain travel arrangements
  • ongoing benefits for an existing treatment plan
  • Treatment for any pre-existing condition for which you are awaiting treatment, unless there is a significant deterioration in that condition during your visit to Jersey

The website says: “You are not covered for non-urgent medical conditions and you have to pay for them.

“You won’t get free treatment for urgent conditions if treatment can be scheduled for a later date.

“If you need emergency treatment that cannot be provided locally, the hospital can arrange a transfer abroad.

“In such cases, you will not be able to select the hospital to which you will be transferred and any referrals related to non-emergency care will be billed.”
