Big Bear Mountain is the latest addition to the range of rides at the popular East Tennessee theme park and promises to be one of the most exciting. According to a Dollywood press release, the coaster will feature cars designed to look like SUVs. But these aren’t your mother’s SUVs. These cars go through some really tight situations very quickly.

The new attraction is slated to open next year in Dollywood’s Wildwood Grove area. The rollercoaster track is just over half a mile long at 3,990 feet and during the nearly two-minute exhilarating ride, guests will zoom around corners and over waves and hills at speeds of nearly 50 miles per hour.

To add even more excitement to the drive, the cars will be equipped with ‘in-car audio’, which not only plays music but also advice from Ned Oakley. Ned is the “fictional” caretaker of Wildwood Grove mascot Benjamin Bear. In fact, the theme of the ride is to take guests on a quest to find Dollywood’s most famous and elusive resident, Big Bear.

Here’s a glimpse of what a few minutes on the Big Bear Mountain Coaster might be like.

Dollywood says the new ride should be open for the 2023 season, and they’re booking pre-season passes for the park and new ride through September 30. If you are wondering if there is a height requirement to ride, you must be at least 39 inches tall.

If you plan the trip, the driving time from the Lafayette area to Pigeon Forge, Tennessee is just over 11 hours, but it’s well worth your time. In fact, the entire Pigeon Forge area is a great getaway for those who enjoy theme parks, music shows, crafts, and my favourite, not-so-fucking-hot temperatures.

The Dollywood website offers guests the opportunity to sign up to be among the first to ride Big Bear Mountain. So if you’re a roller coaster enthusiast, you might want to try your luck at a once-in-a-lifetime experience, ok until you ride it again.

In the meantime, as you plan your vacation with Dolly next year, here are some things you can do right here at home.
