“I’m going to make a very big announcement at Mar-a-Lago on Tuesday, November 15,” Trump told a cheering crowd Monday night in Vandalia, Ohio, where he was holding his final rally of the midseason around Senate nominee JD Vance to strengthen: “We want nothing to distract from the importance of tomorrow.”
Trump has been increasingly vocal about his plans to launch a third presidential campaign, saying in recent days that he is “very, very, very likely” to run again and will formalize his intentions “very, very soon.”
“I’ll probably have to do it again, but stay tuned,” he said Sunday night in Miami. “Stay tuned for tomorrow night in the great state of Ohio.”
Republican officials and some people close to Trump had urged him to wait until after the midterms to start his campaign, in part to avoid turning the election into a referendum against him and to protect him from possible finger pointing if the Republicans don’t do as well as the party hopes.
But Trump is eager to move forward and has privately said for weeks that he may announce his plans at one of his rallies down the stretch, although aides have discussed possible locations and dates for a formal announcement in the coming days.
At a rally in Pennsylvania over the weekend, he told the crowd, “In the next very, very, very short time you’re going to be so happy, okay?”
“You will be surprised how quickly. But first we must win a historic victory for Republicans on November 8,” he said.
Trump won Ohio, once considered the frontrunner, by 8 points in both 2016 and 2020. The state also proved an early test of its supporting power when its decision to back Vance in the state’s hard-fought Senate primary catapulted the political newcomer to victory in a crowded Republican field.
Vance, an author, venture capitalist, and former Trump critic, is part of a new breed of Republican leaders who have embraced Trump’s “American First” positions, including his isolationist foreign policy and focus on immigration.
