Former US President at the weekend and current de facto leader of the Republican Party donald trump logged onto the social network he founded to uninvite Jews, warning them that they had better show him some gratitude “before it’s too late.” Is this completely insane, shocking, and something his allies claim never happened? Yes. Still, is that what he did? Also yes. Writing on Truth Social, Trump informed his supporters: “No president has done more for Israel than I have. However, somewhat surprisingly, our wonderful evangelicals value this far more than people of the Jewish faith, especially those living in the United States. Those living in Israel, however, are a different story — the highest approval rating in the world could easily be PN! US Jews need to pull themselves together and appreciate what they have in Israel before it’s too late!”
There’s so much to unpack here, starting with the classic anti-Semitic dual-loyalty trope that says American Jews who neither live in Israel nor are of Israeli descent should care more about what’s going on there than they do in their own country . Because Trump thinks so, he cannot reconcile the idea that US Jews will not reach out to support him, even if his 2016 election coincided with a rise in anti-Semitism that not only has he failed to stem , but also downright encouraged. Then there is the playing off of seemingly ungrateful Jews against the “wonderful” and “appreciative” evangelical Christians. Trump’s post conveniently does not include the awkward fact that a number of evangelical Christians are focused solely on Israel because they believe it will be the place of the rapture where Jews who have not converted to Christianity go to Hell will come. And last but not least, there is the troubling threat that “US Jews must pull themselves together… before it’s too late.” What will happen when it’s too late? Trump doesn’t say it.
Of course, all of this is utterly chilling, not just because Trump has hinted that he wants to run for a second term, but because he currently has a firm grip on the Republican Party, which doesn’t seem in the least bit concerned about his clear-cut attack on an entire ethnic group -religious group – and one with a particularly long history of attacks by world leaders.
