“Don’t know if someone has promised Bhuvneshwar Kumar he will bowl 19th over”

Former Pakistan captain Salman Butt expressed dissatisfaction with India’s decision to award the 19th over of Australia’s innings to Bhuvneshwar Kumar in the first T20I on Tuesday 20 September.

Despite Kumar’s failure to limit runs in round 19 of the 2022 Asian Cup chases, the Men in Blue insisted on having him do the job in the series opener against the Australians. The fast bowler lost 16 runs in the over, reducing the equation to two runs from the last six balls.

After India’s loss to Australia, Butt sarcastically commented on his YouTube channel:

“I don’t know if anyone promised Bhuvneshwar Kumar that he would throw the 19th over. I don’t understand how you can get Bhuvneshwar on offense for key overs while defending an objective. I don’t think that tactic is worth it because he has neither pace nor backswing.”

Matthew Wade was the hero for Australia as his unbeaten 45-run knock helped the visitors earn an easy four-ball win. With another sarcastic comment on how Indian bowlers facilitated Wade’s job in Mohali, Butt added:

“Everyone praises Matthew Wade. Yes he played well but if he ever gets a Genie he would say give me a slower one on the leg side. Indian bowlers just did that. What he wanted, India gave him. “

Salman Butt felt that India should look for players who can replace Bhuvneshwar Kumar and even offer more pace than Harshal Patel in the death overs.

He listed the names of Mohammed Siraj, Umran Malik and Umesh Yadav as possible replacement options, adding:

“India has Siraj, Umran Malik. Even Umesh Yadav bowled well in the first T20I. They can’t rely on the bowlers they’re betting on right now.”

It remains to be seen if India will make any changes to his death in their second game against Australia on Friday 23 September in Nagpur.
