Drivers pay £44 in tax every time they fill up the tank

However, drivers still pay 55p more in tax every time they fill up their car than they did in April last year and £2.20 more than two years ago.

Liberal Democrat leader Sir Ed Davey said rural communities would suffer most from high fuel taxes. He said Conservative ministers are “arrogantly refusing” to cut VAT and are calling for an emergency cut to 17.5 per cent, which would save families an estimated £600 a year.

He said: “This tax cut must be their next about-face. Troubled families and retirees face an agonizing summer at the pump. “Meanwhile, Rishi Sunak cashes in when drivers spend over £40 per tank of fuel in taxes.”

The war in Ukraine earlier this year sent oil and gas prices skyrocketing and deepened the cost of living crisis. One in two Britons blames the government for rising petrol prices, a Liberal Democrat poll also found.

The fuel tax reduction was previously described by car group RAC as a “drop in the bucket” for financially strapped families.

Boris Johnson this week vowed to tackle petrol stations that don’t pass on the fuel tax cut, saying those who refuse would be named and shamed.

A Government spokesman said: “We know Brits are feeling the impact of rising costs and to help drivers we have reduced fuel taxes by 5p a liter for next year.

“The Economy Secretary has written to fuel distributors to reiterate that this should be reflected in the price people pay at the pumps. We are looking at other options to ensure companies are transparent and drivers are not being overcharged.” Drivers pay £44 in tax every time they fill up the tank
