Echo commentary on the terrorist attacks on Israel
The attacks are rightly referred to as “Israel’s 9/11,” and Israel is right to call for the elimination of the movement that perpetrated such evils, just as the US and UK sought to do so after 9/11. Eliminate al-Qaeda.
The American public was outraged by the terrorist attacks on the Twin Towers, which led to the advance of ground troops into Afghanistan and Iraq. Eventually, Osama bin Laden was caught and al-Qaeda and its affiliates were eliminated, although more than 20 years later there can no longer be said to have been a successful reconstruction of the two countries.
After days of attacks on Gaza, Israel now appears to be on the verge of sending its ground troops to capture Hamas leaders, many of whom are already safely in other countries.
In the middle of it all are the Palestinian civilians, whose lives – if they still have them at all – are being destroyed along with their surroundings. Wiping out Gaza may satisfy Israel’s need for revenge, but someone needs to stop and consider how it will help the future.
Israel needs and deserves the unconditional support of countries like Britain, and for us to provide it in the long-term fight for peace, Israel must be led by cool minds who can see the much bigger picture.
