A clip of Eddie Hearn criticizing Canelo Alvarez vs Gennadiy Golovkin as PPV in the UK has been dug up by fans. Hearn is the promoter of Canelo-Golovkin III, which will be a DAZN PPV worldwide, including the UK.
“Golovkin vs Canelo doesn’t make as many buys as people think it does as a 4am standalone. The view of the person watching this may be a little distorted because they can’t see, I saw Ward Kovalev’s numbers and you didn’t have to pay, you know what I mean? So if that’s the audience for it on Sky, if that was on a subscription channel ie a boxed subscription channel, damn it. So how many buys does Canelo – Golovkin make? Between 100 and 150,000 purchases at 4:30 a.m. in my opinion.”

In 2017, around the time of the first fight between Canelo Alvarez and Gennadiy Golovkin, Hearn had no connection with either fighter. Both Sky Sports, with which Hearn was linked, and BoxNation, founded by Frank Warren, were interested in landing the fight.
It ended up on BoxNation PPV, which Hearn criticized. BoxNation is a TV channel that only shows boxing matches. At the time, Hearn believed that a separate subscription channel couldn’t have too many PPV purchases.
Eddie Hearn criticized the £16.95 price tag for Canelo Alvarez vs Gennadiy Golovkin 1
Hearn also criticized the price BoxNation was charging:
“You’ve got to get someone to pay £16.95 to see this fight between a guy called Canelo, which I’ll be pinning for that, but if you want to know the truth… Canelo isn’t a big name in the UK, and believe me me, Golovkin survived the Brook fight. This is an incredible fight, a great fight but not a big fight in Britain.
In the UK, Canelo Alvarez vs Gennadiy Golovkin III costs £17.98 for new subscribers. The fight will be shown on DAZN, a box subscription platform. Existing subscribers will have to pay £9.99 for the PPV on top of their £7.99 subscription fee in the UK.
As the fight will take place in Las Vegas it is likely that the main event will again take place after 4am UK time.
However, the boxing landscape in the UK has changed since Hearn made those statements. Hearn has connected with DAZN, a subscription-based sports streaming platform. BoxNation still exists but doesn’t show as many fights as it used to, and Queensberry Promotions fights are now usually held on BT Sports.
Canelo Alvarez has since been an undisputed super middleweight champion, defeating two British boxers in the process. Both Callum Smith and Billy Joe Saunders faced a loss to Canelo.
Hype notwithstanding, Golovkin vs. Canelo III is set to take place at an awkward time in the UK, so remains to be seen how successful it is there.

As the fight is also the first US-based DAZN PPV in the UK, it is likely that more US fights will take place in the PPV on DAZN in the UK if it is successful.
