Emmerdale fans confused as David leaves soap again

The cost of living crisis does not appear to be a problem for David Metcalfe, who was spotted in Emmerdale last night (2 August) en route to Portugal.

But David’s departure left soap fans scratching their heads as the shopkeeper was recently spotted lamenting how broke he was.

Matthew Wolfenden’s character raced to the popular holiday destination after receiving a worrying phone call from his ex, Alicia.

He shared with Leyla that Alicia fell off a cliff to take a selfie and broke her leg and collarbone.

Why did David go to Portugal in Emmerdale?

David also managed to avoid the flight chaos at UK airports and secured a same-day seat.

Concerned about leaving Leyla as she is trying to quit using cocaine, David wanted to get in touch with her before leaving.

Leyla told him that she would be fine and that eventually he would have to stop babysitting her.

Unbeknownst to David, Leyla is already using again.

And she digs deeper than ever, agreeing to hide drugs for dealer Callum in Take A Vow.

Viewers took to Twitter to reflect on how David is able to afford his jet-set lifestyle just days after pleading poverty.

“How can David afford a flight to Portugal? Shouldn’t he be skinny?” wondered one fan.

“How could David afford to go to Portugal, he couldn’t have so many money problems,” said another.

“That’s what I thought. The store is always empty too,” agreed another.

A fourth pointed out: “David is taking his 500th vacation of the year.”

And a fifth fumed: “Couldn’t the writers come up with something that’s at least a little believable for David’s disappearance? He’s in debt up to his ears, but can jet off to Portugal in no time, supposedly to take care of an ex?”

Emmerdale’s David struggles with money

David is struggling with money after the pandemic hit his business.

He’s complained so much about his mounting debt that fans even believed he could blackmail Leyla after discovering her drug problems.

Leyla was about to do drugs in Take A Vow when David entered her.

Fans thought it would give him an opportunity to make a quick buck.

One fan wrote: “This could be the perfect blackmail story now that David’s got some dirt #Emmerdale.”

But David is a nice guy and instead decided to help Leyla by taking her to Narcotic Anonymous meetings.

Where exactly does he get his flight financing from?

It remains one of Soapland’s unsolved mysteries!

Emmerdale normally airs weekdays at 7.30pm on ITV, with an hour-long episode on Thursdays.
