The European Commission announced on Wednesday that it has appointed six tech giants as “gatekeepers” under its new Digital Markets Act – a tough set of rules designed to transform the business models of major digital platforms.

The commission said it was of the opinion Amazon, Apple, alphabet, Meta, Microsoft and China’s ByteDance as “gatekeepers.” The term refers to giant internet platforms that the EU believes limit access to core platform services such as online search, advertising, and messaging and communication.

This is a breaking news story and will be updated shortly.
