Even the Playdate Simulator can run on Steam Deck

As another reminder of just how flexible Valve’s Steam Deck handheld gaming PC can be, an enterprising Redditor got the Playdate simulator working on his Steam Deck, as shared on Twitter by Valve designer Lawrence Yang.

The Playdate, if you don’t know it, is Panic’s tiny yellow handheld with a crank, but much like the long Steam Deck reservation queue, Playdate pre-orders are backed up for months. If you place a Playdate pre-order now, it will likely ship first 2023. However, if you already have a Steam deck and want to play around with Playdate’s old-school vibes, it looks like you can do so by installing the free Playdate simulator.

You can see a video of the simulator running on Steam Deck in u/ncarson9’s Reddit post. You launch the simulator from the Steam Deck menus, navigate to a game, open it, and spend a few seconds moving around in one zelda-like forest and wielding a tiny sword.

As with many other things with the Steam Deck, setting up this setup will likely require some tinkering. But it’s fun to see one of the coveted handhelds of 2022 running on another of the coveted handhelds of 2022, even in this limited form. Is this handheld reception?
