“Everyone had a lot planned in the meeting how to get him out”

Indian left-arm wrist spinner Kuldeep Yadav described Sri Lankan captain Dasun Shanaka’s wicket in the second ODI in Kolkata as very important considering the form he was in. He also revealed that there was a lot of discussion about how to get Shanaka knocked out ahead of the game.

Aggressive right-hander Shanaka has been a thorn in India’s side in white ball cricket in recent years. He has also been in amazing form with the willow in the ongoing series. However, Kuldeep bowled the Sri Lankan captain for two on Thursday 12 January at the Kolkata ODI.

The 28-year-old was player of the match due to his impressive numbers of 3/51. In addition to Shanaka, he also fired Kusal Mendis (34) and Charith Asalanka (15). In a post-game interaction with Yuzvendra Chahal on Chahal TV, Kuldeep was asked which of the three was his favorite wicket. He answered:

“Dasun Shanaka’s wicket was very important because he has batted very well in the series and is in form too. It was a very important wicket from a team perspective.

“He has an idea of how well he’s hitting and has absorbed the game deeply. Everyone had a lot planned during the meeting to get him out. So that was definitely an important wicket.”

Shanaka attempted to sweep Kuldeep in the second ODI but missed his punch and saw his leg stump restrained. In his previous four innings on the tour, he had recorded points of 45, 56*, 23 and 108*.

“The focus was on bowling to good length” – Kuldeep Yadav

Kuldeep has plenty of bowling experience at Eden Gardens, having previously been part of the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in the IPL.

When asked about his plans for the second ODI, he explained that his focus is on maintaining good length and not allowing the batters to break free. He elaborated while speaking in a video posted on bcci.tv

“The focus was on bowling to good length. Played a lot at Eden, wickets aren’t that good for spinners. So my thought was to stay at a good length and not give a lot of space. Giving some space, I conceded runs on the cut.

“I wanted to bowl wicket-to-wicket and bring in the variations from there. I have this pace because of my aggressive rhythm. As a result, the batsmen didn’t have as much time to decide whether to go forward or step back.

In the course of his three-wicket streak, Kuldeep also completed 200 wickets in international cricket. On how he felt upon reaching the landmark, the 28-year-old said:

“To get 200 wickets is a big deal in international cricket. Proud, but I don’t know what to say since the record just came out.”

By the way, Kuldeep was also in his last international game – the Chattogram Test against Bangladesh – Player of the Match. He claimed eight wickets and scored 40 runs but was shockingly dropped for the next Test.
