Ezra MillerThe fall of man entered a new phase on Monday when the 30-year-old pleaded not guilty to a Vermont burglary charge. The embattled DC comics star, who appears in court practically alongside his attorney, is charged with burglary and petty theft, a misdemeanor. If found guilty on both counts, they face up to 26 years in prison.
“Ezra Miller pleaded not guilty to one count of burglary and one count of petty theft in Vermont Superior Court this morning and accepted the covenants imposed by the court not to contact or enter the residents’ home,” Miller’s attorney said Lisa B. Shelkrot agreed in a statement vanity fair. “Ezra would like to acknowledge the love and support she has received from her family and friends, who continue to be an important presence in her ongoing mental health.”
Miller is accused of stealing bottles of alcohol from an unoccupied residence in Stamford, Vermont in May. According to Deadline, after an investigation, Vermont state police found probable cause to charge Miller with breaking into an unoccupied apartment. vf‘s Julie Miller wrote that she was told about the incident by Miller’s rep, that the actor was “cooking with her mother, needed rice wine and fetching this and another bottle of wine from the house of a close childhood friend. The rep says Miller didn’t realize the friend didn’t want to be friends anymore.”
Miller’s next hearing in the case is scheduled for Jan. 13, according to the Associated Press. That’s just five months before the premiere date of their upcoming superhero tentpole, The Lightning, which is slated to hit theaters on June 23, 2023. Just last month, Miller filmed a day full of pickup trucks on Warner Bros. property for the project, according to TheWrap. In a recent interview with ell, Issa Rae said Miller’s future career prospects are “a microcosm of Hollywood” amid the recent lawsuits. She added, “There’s this person who is a repeat offender who’s behaving cruelly, and instead of shutting them down and shutting down production, there’s an effort to save the film and them.”
In August, Miller issued a statement about her mental health diversity: “Having recently gone through a period of intense crisis, I now understand that I suffer from complex mental health issues and have begun ongoing treatment. I would like to apologize to anyone I have alarmed and upset with my past behavior. I am committed to doing the work necessary to return me to a healthy, safe and productive phase in my life.”
