Fans send in hilarious responses to James Harden turning down his $47 million player-option

The NBA Free Agency action began with big news from Philadelphia. When James Harden declined his player option, NBA fans sent in their reactions to the superstar’s decision.

In one of the biggest trades of the past season, the Philadelphia 76ers acquired James Harden from the Brooklyn Nets. While the pairing with Joel Embiid showed promise early on, the result was far from satisfactory.

Harden had a pretty disappointing end to his season with the 76ers, and the superstar was heavily criticized. But when free agency opens up, he made a valuable decision for the organization.

By turning down his $47 million player option, Harden has given the 76ers space and financial flexibility. With an opportunity to strengthen their team, several NBA fans praised the superstar’s decision.

James Harden is turning down his $47.4 million option and intends to return to the 76ers on a contract that gives the team more financial flexibility @ShamsCharania

With tons of reactions from around the world, here are some of the best on Twitter:

James Harden is turning down his $47.4 million option ostensibly to pursue a more team-friendly deal with Philly. Westbrook chose IN for his $47 million after a disastrous season. He’s all about just helping Westbrook.

@wojespn the sixers have officially lost the ben simmons trade 😭😭😭

James Harden’s decision to terminate his contract was met with a largely positive response from Sixers fans. Considering the decision gives them the flexibility to acquire players on multiple fronts, Philadelphia could target some valuable role players.

How James Harden’s decision is helping the Philadelphia 76ers

James Harden had one of the most expensive contracts in the league. Harden earned over $44 million last season and saved the 76ers big bucks by turning down his player option this season.

Tobias Harris and Joel Embiid already occupy almost 42% of the total cap space of the ’76. In that regard, Harden, if he exercised his player option, would have pushed Philadelphia deeper into luxury tax territory.

With only the likes of Steph Curry and Russell Westbrook making more than he did, the resulting cap hit could have been devastating for the 76ers.

Though Harden will still make a healthy buck, Philadelphia has more leeway to play around with their finances. The 76s are already over the cap. However, it remains on the books to take steps with the semi-annual and medium exceptions.

The opt-out could go a long way toward transforming the Sixers bank, including the full mid-level exemption, the $4.1 million semi-annual exemption, and sign-and-trades.

In that regard, players like Miami Heat’s PJ Tucker are on the radar. Tucker, who is pushing for a three-year, $33 million deal, falls into the medium exceptional category.

While the 76ers could try to sign the veteran, there are some complications. The 76ers have just over $6.4 million to play in the mid-level exceptional division. This means the site has to ship some other parts to acquire the Miami veteran.

However, this is just one of several possible scenarios for Philadelphia. With the goal of winning the championship, the 76ers have some cash to play around with.

Considering the season Joel Embiid is ending, Philadelphia would be wise to find ways to support their superstar as he enters his prime.
