Former Boston Red Sox pitcher Curt Schilling has made headlines again for contributing his two cents to the Brittney Griner saga. On Thursday, a Russian court sentenced Griner to nine years in prison for bringing cannabis into the country. The former WNBA star also faces a one million ruble ($16,522) fine.
Many, including Curt Schilling, believe the athlete broke international law and should take responsibility for her actions. The 55-year-old, three-time World Series champion blamed selective outrage on America’s left.
“A woman who has broken the laws of another country is much more offended,” said Schilling
Schilling made his views clear in his latest tweet. He closed with the hashtag “horriblepeople”.
“The Left in America Today: A woman who broke the laws of another country and was jailed for being ‘left behind’ was far more offended than ever by this dung heap that is abandoning Americans in Afghanistan or deserting heroes in Benghazi leaves. #terriblepeople– Kurt Schilling
Gringer was arrested at Moscow’s Sheremetyevo International Airport on February 17. She was in possession of a vape cartridge containing hash oil. Although she has garnered support from much of the country, the case has polarized the American public.
Curt Schilling has been vocal in support of Brittney Griner’s prison sentence
This is not the first time that Schilling has commented on this topic. Less than a month ago, he responded to NBA superstar LeBron James’ tweet to support Griner’s return to the States.
“I know this may seem like a stretch. But about 300 million people understand OBEY THE F*****G LAW, why is that such a challenge? And why on earth should she NOT pay the fine for breaking another state law?” – Kurt Schilling
On that occasion, his aggressively worded message focused on the legal side of the case, declaring that most people “obey the damn law.” Schilling has stated in the past that Griner never denied committing the crime, which he says is a key factor in the case.
The WNBA and NBA commissioners also released a joint statement on the decision, calling it “unjustified and unfortunate.” Both have called for Griner’s safe return to the United States.
“WNBA Commissioner Cathy Engelbert and NBA Commissioner Adam Silver issued the following statement regarding Brittney Griner:” – NBA
Due to the simultaneous situation with the war in Ukraine, this case has additional significance. US President Joe Biden has said Russia wrongly arrested Griner. He is under intense pressure to negotiate a deal to bring her back to the United States.
Many believe Brittney Griner is being used as a pawn in Russia-US negotiations. Whether or not she intended to break the law, a nine-year sentence seems harsh for an athlete in her prime. The 31-year-old will be in her 40s when she is released.
