Film stars to contend with TikTok swarm on the red carpet at Cannes

The red carpet was once the preserve of cinema kings, bathed in the light of blinking lightbulbs, but a new generation of stars are claiming their place under the glow of camera phones.

The Cannes Film Festival has partnered with TikTok as the social media site extends its influence into the arts, inviting the platform’s young stars to swarm the red carpet at this year’s event.

The 75-year-old film festival is the latest institution to partner with video-sharing platform TikTok, which offers venerable arts organizations huge young audiences in exchange for priceless publicity by being associated with major cultural events.

Tiktok celebrities have been invited to take their place alongside movie stars like Sir Anthony Hopkins and Idris Elba on the Cannes red carpet, and British hits on the social media app will be creating videos during the annual Glamor Parade and then beaming them to theirs online followers.
