A new Final Fantasy 16 trailer has just been released and is packed with new stories about the game world of Valisthea, its kingdoms and the powerful Eikons at the epicenter.
Final Fantasy 16 is still slated for “summer 2023” (probably between June and September), but the PS5 exclusive seems to be shaping up to be something very special. The latest trailer fills us in on the game’s multitude of warring kingdoms.
We see a bunch of new characters, as well as more scenes featuring those we’ve met in previous trailers. A particular focus is on the Dominants, humans who can transform into giant, devastating Eikons. These Eikons will be familiar to longtime Final Fantasy fans as they take the form of summons such as Ifrit, Phoenix, Odin, Garuda and Bahamut to name a few.
The trailer also reminds us how different Final Fantasy 16 is from most of the last two decades of the series. Developer Creative Business Unit 3 (who also directs Final Fantasy 14 and its expansions) seems to be building a medieval world more in keeping with the earliest games in the series than the heavy sci-fi borrowings of more contemporary entries.
An iconic entry?
We may still be in the dark as to when exactly we’ll get our hands on Final Fantasy 16, but this latest trailer makes it look like the wait will be worth it.
As an avid Final Fantasy 14 fan, I consider it a mark of quality that so many of its key collaborators are working on FF16, including composer Masayoshi Soken, art director Hiroshi Minagawa, and localization lead Michael-Christopher Koji Fox. Oh, and it’s great to see Devil May Cry 5’s Combat Director Ryota Suzuki also bring his decades of talent to the game.
Speaking of combat, while I’ve loved every single Final Fantasy 16 trailer so far, I really hope we get something of a gameplay deep dive soon. We’ve seen a pretty healthy amount of Valisthea now, at least on the surface. In comparison, we only saw brief snippets of the fight. A trailer showing what the protagonist Clive (and any potential party members who might join him) is really made of would be great to see.
