Flood chaos in South Shields after the Great North Run 2023
Tyne and Wear Metro said the floods had caused the closure of South Shields station and caused a widespread problem on the network.
In a tweet, @My_Metro told riders that traffic between Bede and South Shields was halted and that they should take shelter and await further guidance.
The heavy downpour has caused severe flooding across our network, particularly in Tyne Dock and South Shields. Services between Bede-South Shields are now suspended. We will be closing Sth Shields station to deal with the flooding. Please shelter in place for now and await further advice

Emergency services are understood to be helping people through the floodwaters to keep crowds moving.
The Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service said they are receiving an extremely high volume of calls related to the flooding and that calls involving life-threatening risks are given priority.

This morning 60,000 people took part in the 42nd annual Great North Run, a 13.1 mile half marathon from Newcastle to South Shields.
The storm came after hot weather hit 25 degrees Celsius this morning.
The Met Office has said motorists should prepare for difficult conditions and possible flooding on the roads, while there could also be power outages.
