Florida Will Be Teaching Real History, Not Wokeness

Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis of Florida schooled a reporter who asked if he wanted to “whitewash” the teaching of American history on issues like slavery.

At a Tuesday news conference in Bradenton, the Harvard-trained attorney was asked about a law he signed into law in April that bans critical race theory classes in schools.

“Governor, there is a history teacher here in Bradenton who is suing to repeal the Stop WOKE Act,” the reporter said, referring to Don Falls, a social studies teacher at Manatee High School. “He is concerned that this will lead to a whitewashing of the doctrine of slavery and other issues. What do you say to such teachers?”

The governor responded by stating that Florida schools are required by law to teach history that includes teaching about slavery and civil rights, but that history must be accurate and not distorted, left-wing propaganda.

“I would advise you to read the Florida statutes,” DeSantis said. “We must teach slavery, rebuilding after rebuilding and segregation, and civil rights. These are core pieces of American history that should be taught. But it should also be taught accurately.”

The governor criticized the toxic, pervasive influence that critical race theory has on American education.

“For example, the 1619 project is a CRT version of history,” DeSantis said. “It’s endorsed by the New York Times. They want to teach our children that the American Revolution was fought to protect slavery. And that’s wrong.

Do you think CRT should be taught in schools?

“We know why the American Revolution was fought. They wrote leaflets. We saw them pouring tea into Boston Harbor. We have seen them meet in Philadelphia and we have the record of why they opposed King George III. rebelled.”

DeSantis pointed out that “it was the American Revolution that caused people to question slavery,” and this evolution of thought led to the birth of abolitionist movements.

The father-of-three said children shouldn’t be taught a twisted version of American history that demonizes the United States to advance left-wing agendas.

“So you can’t teach a history that’s used to advance an ideological agenda,” he said. “One cannot teach that the foundations of our country were somehow evil.”

“Our founders pledged their lives, their fortunes, and their sacred honor, and they made a mark in the sand,” said DeSantis.

“Not everything was the same right away, of course not. But every major movement in our country’s history has descended directly from these core principles.”

Essentially, critical race theory demonizes white people by saying that they are privileged because of their skin color and by suggesting that all white people are inherently racist.

On the other hand, CRT teaches black children that they are victims of “systemic racism” who cannot be as successful as white people because of their skin color.

In short, critical race theory disempowers both blacks and whites, categorizing them as either helpless victims or callous oppressors.

If you’re white, CRT should make you feel guilty and apologetic. And if you’re black, you should feel angry and entitled.

Its proponents want to rewrite history to justify the pursuit of “justice” (not equality) at all levels of society, from academia to politics to entertainment, media, business, the military and sports.

DeSantis dismissed the false narrative that anyone who criticizes CRT is racist or doesn’t want slavery to be included as a dark chapter in American history.

“We want to teach history, the whole story – but it has to be accurate,” he said. “And we’re not going to get into a situation where we take George Washington’s name out of schools and take down statues of Thomas Jefferson. And that’s exactly what those who want CRT want.

“They want to change history. They want to delegitimize these people – and we don’t.”

The governor added, “Don’t let anyone tell you that we don’t want to teach these subjects because not only do we want to, but the law requires them to be taught.”
