Former Liberal MP faces court dismissal of charges – Casino Reports

Just last week, an Ontario court officially closed the case against former Liberal MP Raj Grewal, who was accused of using his position to fund his gambling debts. Supreme Court Justice Sylvia Corthorn announced that the two charges of infidelity against him had been dropped, ending criminal proceedings that began last summer.

The former MP left the Liberals in 2018 after his gambling problem became public knowledge, causing the pot to move. Then, in 2020, the RCMP charged him with four counts of breach of trust and one of CA$5,000 fraud. He is also said to have offered Prime Minister Justin Trudeau access and help with immigration paperwork in exchange for large loans to cover his gambling debts.

Following his acquittal, Mr Grewal revealed that this particularly challenging part of his life had come to an end. He noted the system may be imperfect, but Canadians take comfort in knowing it is a strong and capable judiciary. He also shared that he had been guilty of public opinion in court in recent years.

Nader Hasan, who represented Mr Grewal in court, claimed that a conscientious judge saw the charges for what they were, baseless and unprovable. He explained that it was unprovable as there was no criminal activity and no criminal intent. He added that the “fragile core” of the prosecution is a serious cultural misunderstanding, as it is common for Brampton residents to help each other out with loans.

Meanwhile, Judge Corthorn said that a reasonable jury, given proper instructions, could not have returned a guilty verdict. She added that the conclusions needed to support the Crown’s theory could not be reasonably or logically drawn, which is why Mr Grewal was found not guilty. Prosecutor Tim Wightman did not comment on the decision.

On Friday, Mr. Hasan also said that moral failure and the development of a gambling problem are not even remotely connected to a criminal act. He added that his client had made great strides and worked hard to take back control of his life. He also criticized the speedy and irresponsible sentencing that followed shortly after news of Mr Grewal’s gambling problem.

In February, the lawyer argued that prosecutors had not produced enough evidence to convict his client of the two breach of trust charges and wanted them dropped. He also claimed that the crown failed to identify himself essential elements for such a decision, whereby the prosecution also points out that the judge wants to ignore many facts and evidence.

Some of the reports

Reports surfaced back in 2019 claiming that a special fundraiser had convened in April 2018 almost 600,000 CAD. It reportedly took place while he was struggling with millions of Canadian dollars in debt. Interested parties support the fundraiser had the opportunity to do so in exchange for a CA$500 ticket guaranteeing entry to the event.
