Freiburg vs Juventus preview
It was a tough night for Freiburg in Turin. But after not having a shot on goal and actually only missing a goal, it was a decent result for the Breisgauer to return to Germany just one goal behind.
But while they lacked offensive punch and at times rode their luck, they defended heroically and in doing so created a real chance for a place in the last eight of this competition. They need to find some attacking power from somewhere, however, having scored just 14 goals in their 11 games in 2023.

Freiburg’s beautiful season continues
In the Bundesliga, Freiburg have performed well despite their modest scoring record and currently sit fifth, just seven points behind leaders Bayern Munich. They appear well positioned to contend for a Champions League spot and recorded an important 2-1 home win over Hoffenheim at the weekend, with Ritsu Doan scoring an 89th-minute winner.
The Europa Park stadium has become something of a fortress – they are unbeaten there in 11 league games – and are yet to lose the second division of a European clash, albeit from just three games. Everything points to a nerve-wracking but potentially exciting night in Freiburg.
Di Maria leads the Juve charge
For Juve, Di Maria continued his stellar Europa League form – scoring a hat-trick in Nantes in the second leg of play-off qualifiers – with the decisive winner in the first leg of that clash. Despite turning 35, the Argentina international remains one of Juve’s key players.
While the Europa League isn’t the old lady’s favorite competition – they landed there after bombing their Champions League group and finishing behind Benfica and PSG – this is now, along with the Coppa Italia, their best shot at the title this season after docking 15 points in Serie A due to financial irregularities.

Good Juve record against German opponents
Max Allegri’s men are currently seventh in Serie A (after points deducted) and secured a 4-2 win over Sampdoria at the weekend but that left them 10 points adrift of the top four with 12 games to go. Therefore, their best path to next season’s Champions League would be to win this competition.
Juve’s record against German sides is good as they have lost only one of the last nine and won the last three without conceding a single goal. They have also managed to progress in each of the last nine knockout games in Europe, where they have been promoted to the second leg. The omens are good for the old lady.

The Old Lady are buoyed by their 3-0 win at Nantes in the last round and as they are still in the black the value here is the away win.
