The Paladins, No. 13 in the South, were as much as 12 points down after the break before charging back in the dying seconds to claim victory with a three-pointer from JP Pegues and have now won seven in a row.
The fifth-placed Aztecs had their hands full early on Thursday against Charleston but took control after the break on their way to a 63-57 win and their first opening-round win at March Madness since 2015.
Furman vs San Diego State March Madness History

Opportunistic Paladins frustrate Cavs with disgruntled victory
The Paladins, not known for dominating defense this season, managed to consistently frustrate Virginia on their way to an impressive 68-67 win on Thursday, especially after the break. The Cavaliers dominated the color in the first half while walking 46% from the field, but gave Virginia a headache in the second half. Trailing 12, the Paladins switched to zone defense and quickly closed the gap on the Cavaliers, who were only shooting 2-for-12 from outside the arc that day.

With the victory, the Paladins have now kept opponents under 70 points in nine of their 13 games. At the top, Senior Jalen Slawson led an opportunistic Furman attack and notched a game-high 19 points, along with 10 rebounds. Slawson has now averaged 18 points and eight boards in his last three games and has nine double-doubles this season.
Aztecs survive first round challenge of Charleston
The Cougars gave the Aztecs a good run for their money in the first round. Charleston managed to hold on tightly for the first 20 minutes but could not keep up after the break when SDSU ended their triple losing streak at the NCAA tournament. In fact, Thursday’s competition wasn’t as close as the result suggested, as the Aztecs forced Charleston to rely heavily on three-point shooting while converting just 32.1% from the floor.
At the top, leading scorer Matt Bradley was the only Aztec shooter to be in double figures, scoring 17 points and seven boards. Big man Jaedon Ledee came off the bench to record eight points and eight rebounds for the second time in as many games.
Furman vs San Diego State Prediction
Opportunity will knock for the Paladins on Saturday if they can continue to effectively adjust their defenses to rapidly changing game situations. The challenge for Furman is to find a way to generate an attack against an Aztec squad that limits opponents to just 54.8 points per game during a 5-0 run. That sets the stage for a low-point affair, with all the pressure placed squarely on SDSU’s back.
The Choice: Paladins +5.5 (-102); BELOW 137.5 (-110)
