Gary Lineker has responded to the insults he received on Twitter over a comment about England’s lionesses.
The BBC pundit took to social media to congratulate the women on their historic victory.
Unfortunately, as is sometimes the case with social media, some fans lost the context around his tweet.
As a result, he received some backlash for his remark.
What did Gary Lineker say on Twitter?
“Football is a simple game. 22 women chase a ball for 90 minutes and in the end England actually wins. Congratulations @lionesses. Fabulous,” Gary tweeted on Sunday.
Unfortunately, soon after, Gary was criticized by some for the supposedly backward compliment.

“What a clumsy congratulation that is. Never heard it called simply on MoTD. But 22 women @playing an easy@game would obviously win. Easy.
“Side eye for real,” said one confused follower.

“It went into overtime and they weren’t easy, they were fantastic role models for football,” tweeted a second.
While a third said: “Could you have made a more condescending tweet? You did something you never could.”

However, it turns out that many of Gary’s followers were unaware that he was paraphrasing his own famous quote.
Trying to clear up the confusion, one follower explained that Gary was actually complimenting the women, saying: “It’s a reference to an old joke about men’s football – ‘Football is a simple game. 22 guys chase a ball for 90 minutes and then the Germans win on penalties.’”
In response to the controversy surrounding the tweet, Gary took to Twitter again on Monday (August 1).
Sharing a picture of his original quote, he tweeted: “The Post-Italia ’90 quote for Context. You are welcome.”

Meanwhile, Gary also received backlash for a pun he made about the women’s victory.
Referring to one of the players who ripped his jersey off, he wrote: “The @Lionesses just did it and Kelly is England’s hero, bra none.”
He later wrote: “It was just a pun given the celebration. I always make crap like this here, also about men’s football. I deleted it as a lot of people didn’t see the game and missed the context.”
