Gary Neville predicts who will finish higher between Arsenal and Manchester United

Manchester United legend Gary Neville believes Arsenal will finish better than his former side in the 2022-23 Premier League standings.

Neville argued that the Gunners appear to be in “far better shape” than United, who have had to grapple with off-field issues involving Frenkie de Jong and Cristiano Ronaldo.

Asked who would finish higher in the league table between the two teams at the end of next season, the Englishman told Sky Sports:

“Arsenal definitely feel in much better shape. United have the De Jong situation that’s dragging on, the Ronaldo situation that’s a distraction, it’s bothering them and it’s going to distract the manager in his press conferences, which takes away from him the ethics he’s built up over that one-season tour.”

Manchester United have been linked with Barcelona midfielder De Jong since the start of the current transfer window. However, they have yet to get the player to Old Trafford.

Meanwhile, Ronaldo is said to have told the Red Devils that he wanted to leave Old Trafford (according to David Ornstein). The 37-year-old also missed most of the club’s pre-season before returning last week.

He then made headlines for leaving Old Trafford with a number of other players before the Red Devils’ friendly against Rayo Vallecano was over. Club manager Erik ten Hag has since considered it “unacceptable” behaviour, according to The Guardian.

Arsenal, meanwhile, have had a fantastic pre-season and added five new players. There weren’t too many distractions off the pitch either as they head into the new season with optimism.

Neville, who spent almost two decades at Manchester United and won 20 trophies, concluded:

“There are definitely more questions about United because they haven’t gone about their business and their star player is in a position where he may well be leaving. You have to tell Arsenal.”

How did Manchester United and Arsenal fare last season?

Manchester United took part in seven pre-season games, winning four, drawing twice and losing once.

They beat Liverpool, Melbourne Victory, Crystal Palace and AFC Wrexham with the last game being played behind closed doors. The Red Devils have added three newcomers to their roster in Tyrell Malacia, Christian Eriksen and Lisandro Martinez.

Mikel Arteta’s Gunners, on the other hand, suffered only one loss and won all other games in the preseason. They picked up victories against Ipswich Town, FC Nuremberg, Everton, Orlando City, Chelsea and Sevilla. The only defeat the club suffered was a behind closed doors friendly against Brentford.

Arsenal have notably added Gabriel Jesus, Oleksandr Zinchenko, Fabio Vieira, Marquinhos and Matt Turner to their squad in the current transfer window. They will start the new Premier League season tonight (5 August) at Selhurst Park against Crystal Palace.

Manchester United, meanwhile, take on Brighton & Hove Albion at Old Trafford on Saturday (6 August).
