“I wasn’t surprised because it’s the switch from summer to winter gasoline – that’s the main reason we’re seeing such a large number,” McTeague said Tuesday.
“In the summer, we want to use a specific gasoline to make sure it doesn’t evaporate and cause problems with your vehicle’s emissions. In winter you want the opposite. You want something that ignites more easily and is a little more volatile.
“What is needed to produce summer gasoline is more expensive and winter gasoline is cheaper. Normally we see a difference of four or five cents, but this time it’s completely different.”
The other reason for the price drop, he said, is: “The refineries did very, very well in fuel supply last summer, so liquidation sales are in full swing.” And all of Eastern Canada will be affected. All of Ontario – except Thunder Bay, which is in a different area.”
McTeague added: “Western Canada is not going to see this yet. But it’s Ontario, Quebec and all of Atlantic Canada because they all serve the same market. The market is not ready yet. There will be another penny drop on Thursday.”
