A Georgia couple has been accused of attempting to murder their young son by withholding food and medical treatment.

Police in Griffin, 40 miles south of Atlanta, also charged Tyler Schindley, 46, and Krista Schindley, 47, with first degree cruelty to children.
At a news conference on Tuesday, police said a 10-year-old boy was found walking alone by neighbors. When asked if he was okay, the boy replied that he was going to go to a store to get something to eat because he was hungry.
When officers went to the neighbor’s house, the boy asked “please don’t force him to return,” officials said. according to NBC subsidiary WXIA-TV in Atlanta.
Police said the emaciated boy weighed 16 kg and was very small and thin. According to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, a boy at this age should weigh around 31 kg, typically between 26 and 45 kg.

Officials said the boy was being treated for malnutrition at a local hospital.

According to police orders, the parents “deliberately withheld food from the teenager for an extended period of time,” resulting in “tooth injuries and disfigurement.”
The warrant accused the parents of “having the minor child[locked]in his bedroom and leaving the child alone in the home for extended periods and on multiple occasions, without access to light, food, clothing, or interaction with adults and… /or or help.”
The couple are also facing assault charges for allegedly making “physical contact with the teenage victim” and causing injuries.
