Gerrit Cole responds to Josh Naylor’s HR celebration mocking the New York Yankees ace during game 4 of ALDS

New York Yankees ace Gerrit Cole has reacted to Josh Naylor’s “Rocking the Baby” celebration during game four of the American League Division Series.

In the post-match conference, Cole revealed his thoughts on Naylor’s move, saying:

“Yeah. Anyway. It’s cute. I just wasn’t aware of it. I didn’t see it at the moment and it wouldn’t have bothered me at the moment and it’s just kind of funny.”

Gerrit Cole on Josh Naylor’s tour of the bases: “Yeah. However. It’s cute.”

Naylor was also spotted calling Cole his “little damn son.” Naylor hit two career homers against Cole with a .267 (4-for-15). The all-important home run, however, came in the fourth inning, reducing Cleveland’s deficit to just one run.

The 405-foot home run left Naylor’s bat at 110.3 mph, marking the 35th home run Cole allowed this season and the third hardest home run of Naylor’s career.

Guardians’ Triston McKenzie told MLB.com earlier this month Naylor’s celebration. He said:

“Nayls, when he mistakes people for Homers, he calls them his son. Hence the rocking of the baby as it walks around the bases.”

Josh Naylor just rocked the baby around the bases and called Gerrit Cole “his little damn son” while taking 3rd place.

However, the Yankees had the last laugh, winning the game 4-2 to force a Game 5 playoff in New York, with Cole giving up just two runs in seven innings and just one run in 6¹/₃.

Despite Gerrit Cole’s disastrous homer record, he stuck to his basics and continued his Game 1 form. The 32-year-old hit eight in a 110-pitch outing to keep the Guardians at bay. After the game, Cole reacted to his great performance that took them to the Bronx for the decider by saying:

“When they told me I was going to Game 4, they knew there was a way to win or go home. I didn’t approach the game any differently. I just went out and did my job.”

The winner of Game 5 in New York meets the Astros in the AL Championship Series. In the history of the best-of-five postseason series, teams 2-1 behind that won Game 4 to stay alive also won Game 5 26 out of 47 times, which is nearly 55% of the time case is.

With everything at stake, Cole and the Yankees will look to end an exciting streak at home and get closer to another Championship Series appearance.
