Your first look at the cast of the upcoming yellowstone prequel series, 1923
Set to premiere exclusively on Paramount Plus next month, on December 18, they unveiled official cast photos of Harrison Ford and Helen Mirren leading the charge as Jacob and Cara Dutton at the Dutton Ranch in Montana.
The new two-season limited series, starring the above two superstars at the helm of this cast, is based on the Dutton family’s trials and tribulations during the Prohibition era, the onset of the Great Depression and battles with the flu.
The all-star cast also includes Brandon Sklenar, Darren Mann, Michelle Randolph, James Badge Dale, Marley Shelton, Brian Geraghty, Sebastian Roché, Robert Patrick, Aminah Nieves, Julia Schlaepfer and Jerome Flynn.
They’ve shared several photos of the actors on the 1923 Instagram page in full character on set, and I’m even more excited to see the new series when it premieres in just over a month:
“Meet Jacob and Cara Dutton. #1923TV launches December 18th exclusively on #ParamountPlus.”
The occupation of 1923
1923 will revolve around the life of the Dutton family up until the end of Prohibition, the onset of the Great Depression and the flu pandemic.
According to the official summary:
“1923 focuses on the next two generations of the Dutton family as they struggle to survive historic drought, lawlessness and prohibition, and an epidemic of cattle rustling; all fought under the cloud of Montana’s Great Depression, which preceded the nation by nearly a decade.”
Needless to say, we have a lot to look forward to when the series releases in December.
In the meantime, let’s take a look at the upcoming stars of the show:
The Dutton Family:
Harrison Ford will play Jacob Dutton’s brother Tim McGraws 1883 Character Jacob Dutton.
Helen Mirren takes on the role of Cara Dutton, Jacob’s wife.
James Badge Dale will play John Dutton Sr., Jacob’s eldest nephew and right-hand man. He is the son of James Dutton (Tim McGraw) and the great-grandfather of John Dutton (Kevin Costner).
Marley Shelton will play Emma Dutton, wife of John Dutton Sr. and mother of Jack Dutton.
Darren Mann will play Jack Dutton, son of John Sr. and Emma and Jacob Dutton’s great nephew. He is a hardworking rancher and committed to the Dutton name.
Brandon Sklenar will portray Spencer Dutton, Jacob Dutton’s nephew and John Dutton Sr.’s brother.
Jerome Flynn, aka Bronn from Game of Thrones, will play Banner Creighton, a hardened Scottish brogue and leader of the local sheep farmers. Sounds like he has what it takes to be a villain?
Robert Patrick takes on the role of Sheriff William McDowell, a friend of the Dutton family.
Michelle Randolph will play Elizabeth Strafford, a feisty woman willing to do anything to marry into the Dutton family.
Brian Geraghty will play a trusty ranch foreman on the series.
Aminah Nieves plays Teonna Rainwater, a young woman living in a state boarding school. Judging by her last name, she’s probably related to Thomas Rainwater yellowstone.
Julia Schlaepfer plays Alexandra, a Brit who meets one of the Duttons abroad.
Jennifer Ehle will play Irish nun Sister Mary O’Connor.
Former James Bond actor Timothy Dalton will play Donald Whitfield, a “rich and disgraceful” man who appears to be an enemy of the Dutton family.
Still, I can’t wait to see how it all comes together this December.
The Dutton family tree
In this flashback from 1893 yellowstone Season 4, We see that James has two sons with him, John Sr. (who will be a main character in 1923) and Spencer… Generation Two.
You should be in your forties or something at the time 1923 rolls around and will have kids of their own (Generation Three), and John Sr. and Spencer might even have young grandkids (people got married pretty young back then), so that’s Generation Four.
Well, this is where it gets interesting…John Dutton III (born sometime in the 1950s) of Yellowstone National Park would be fifth generation, meaning Kayce, Jamie (adopted), the late Lee Dutton, and Beth Dutton are all sixth generation and young would be Tate would be generation 7.
And that’s exactly what Tim McGraw himself confirmed.
Tim says he plays John Dutton’s great-great-grandfather in the bonus Blu-ray content:
“I play John Dutton’s great-great-grandfather. Our family is the first to discover and settle in Yellowstone. And in doing so, we’re the first to really defend it and fight people off, trying to establish it and then survive.
JD is the patriarch of the family. I guess he was the guy who had the balls to go and take his family across country to Montana and kind of settle that unknown land, that untamed land up there, and turn it into something.”
Of course, what generation of Dutton has implications for the show because in the season finale of 1883, Elsa Dutton (Isabel May) is on the brink of death and her father James Dutton (Tim McGraw) must find a place to bury her because wherever they bury her body, the Dutton family will settle.
So Spotted Eagle, a crow elder, recommends a place called Paradise Valley.
But there’s a catch… the Duttons can’t keep it forever.
“Yes, paradise. Good name. But you know this: that in seven generations my people will rise up and take them back to you.”
James says about this:
“You can have it in seven generations.”
Doesn’t bode well for the Dutton family in Yellowstone Season 5, does it?
