Google has started rolling out a new feature designed to help users strengthen their online privacy (opens in new tab) by helping remove personally identifiable information (PII) from search engine results pages.
After opening the Google app on Android devices, some users can tap their profile picture in the upper-right corner of the screen. There you will find a new menu item called “Results about you”. Tapping this menu item will take them to a new page that explains how they can ask Google to remove personal information (opens in new tab) from search results. This data includes phone numbers, mailing addresses, email addresses and more.
Users finding PII can now click the three dots menu located in the top right corner of any search result. There you will find a new tool “Remove result”. If they want to remove it, they must provide a reason, e.g. E.g. “it shows my personal contact information”, “it contains illegal information” or “it is out of date”.
Users can then track Google as it progresses with distance. Your requests are divided into three categories: All Requests, Pending, and Approved.
Google first announced the new tool in May 2022 during its I/O 2022 conference, where it said it would be rolling out “in the coming months,” and now it’s starting to roll out to some users in Europe and the United States will.
It also explained how it chooses which requests to grant and which to deny: “It is important to note that when we receive removal requests, we review all content on the site to ensure we are not restricting the availability of other information that is general useful, for example in news articles. And of course, removing contact information from Google Search doesn’t remove it from the web, so you might want to contact the hosting site directly if you’re ok with that.”
