Dolly Parton says she’s “had a great life”. The country music icon and philanthropist turned 77 on Jan. 19 but says she’s never thought about aging “in years.” Instead, she measures her life in terms of experiences and accomplishments.

“People say, ‘How do you stay so young?’ and I’m like, ‘Because I don’t have time to age,'” Parton told Yahoo Life. “That’s really my line, but it’s true… I’m turning 77 and I’m like, Golly, how did I get that old? Time just flew by, but you base it more on what’s in front of you than what’s behind you.”

“I believe: I have to work. I gotta make hay while the sun is shiningShe keeps going. “I have been blessed to have done so many things in my life. They say wisdom comes with age and if that’s true then I should be really smart by now because 77 is a big number.”

To celebrate her birthday, Parton released a brand new song: “Don’t let me get down there.” She describes the tune as “God’s perspective – wondering what we’re doing with our lives.”

“He says, ‘Don’t make me slow down. My children, you best pay attention. Why can’t you learn to listen? Learn to love and share?’ Then he goes through all the things we’re doing that need to be fixed before it’s too late.”

Parton says she decided to release the song on her birthday, hoping to “start the new year on a positive note.”

“People always ask me for words of wisdom or some dolly-isms or whatever they call it,” she says.

So what Dolly-isms would she offer to young women just beginning their adult lives?

“There’s this saying, ‘Be true to yourself,'” she says. “You have to know who you are and believe in your talents and whatever you’re trying to promote or do. Don’t let your fear hold you back.”

In fact, Parton has made a habit of moving forward despite her own fears.

“I have a saying that my desire has always outweighed my fear,” she admits. “Even when I’m scared to death of something, I’m like, ‘Well, if I don’t try, I’ll never know, and what’s the worst that could happen? I’ll just try something else or I’ll try again later.”

“It’s not like anyone would do it kill you or something [if you fail]. You’ll just try, so don’t be afraid to try,” she adds. “Try to do what you think is right. And it’s okay to fail. If you fail, get up and try again.”

Parton spoke to Yahoo Life while introducing her to the release of new arrivals Dolly’s Southern Favorites Backline, a partnership with Duncan Hines. When the line was first launched in 2022, coconut and banana cake mixes and matching icings were launched. Now a cornbread and biscuit mix and two types of brownie are joining the collection.

“People have been asking for it,” says Parton of the new signings. “People were like, well, you’ve got all these cakes and all these cookies, but we need some things that aren’t so cute. People just wanted more of that Southern stuff.”

But she’s careful not to show more love for one product than the others: “I won’t pick a favorite because I think they’re all good,” she says. “I really do. It depends if I’m in a sweet mood and want cake or if I want something like cornbread or cookies with a soup or stew or chili.”

But is there any advice the iconic performer has received throughout her life that she keeps reinventing?

“My mother used to quote all these great sayings like ‘Be true to yourself’ and ‘All things are possible for those who believe,’ which is scripture,” she recalls. “So I’m just trying to get out of my own way and stay on a path and not let too many voices into my head.”

“I try to stay true to my original plan and try not to be a follower and follow every little trend that comes up,” Parton continues. “I try to be sure of myself: keep your own advice so you don’t get too confused or too scattered. Even if someone says something to you and you think it sounds good, you have to analyze that before you jump off someone else, Cliff.”
