Governor Calls for Investigation of Prestigious Hospital After Conservative Commentator’s Exposé of Pediatric Transgender Clinic

Republican Tennessee Gov. Bill Lee has called for an investigation into the Pediatric Transgender Clinic at Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville, according to conservative author and presenter Matt Walsh on Tuesday.

Walsh’s report alleges that Vanderbilt “medicates minors, chemically castrates them, and performs double mastectomies,” assuages conflicting opinions among his doctors through threats and coercion, hires transgender activists to ensure staff compliance, and does everything possible to ensure the Profitably exploiting Obamacare’s insurance coverage mandates on The Daily Wire.

The hospital, which is ranked #19 on US News & World Report’s Best Hospitals Honor Roll, responded with a statement that Walsh’s reports “misrepresent facts about the care the medical center provides to transgender patients.”

Videos obtained by Walsh and his team, posted to Twitter and linked in the Daily Wire story, show VUMC staff promoting transgender practices as “big moneymakers” and warning staff against “conscientious objectors,” it said in the report.

In the first video released by Walsh, a woman identified as Dr. Shayne Sebold Taylor of the VUMC Transgender Health Clinic told her colleagues: “Effective January 1, 2017, under the Affordable Care Act, insurance carriers are required to pay medical expenses for trans people. Some of our VUMC financial experts, in October 2016, a few years ago, listed some costs that we think each patient would bring.”

In the video, the announcer rattled off potential dollar figures for various procedures: “Female-to-male breast reconstruction” could fetch $40,000; Vaginoplasty surgeries can fetch well over $20,000. “And the female-to-male butt surgeries — they’re huge money makers,” she said; such procedures could fetch “up to $100,000” for the hospital.

The speaker in the video emphasized the potential financial gains for the hospital. “These surgeries are labor intensive, they require a lot of follow-up visits, they take a lot of time and … they make money for the hospital,” Taylor said, according to The Daily Wire.

Some hospitals, she told her audience, are fully assisted by phalloplasty.

In another video, a spokeswoman identified as Vanderbilt’s Ellen Wright Clayton, a healthcare law expert, told staff that any “conscientious objection” to performing these surgeries based on “religious beliefs” would and should face “consequences.” .

She added that employees who object to the procedures should probably seek employment elsewhere.

“If you want to claim conscientious objection, you have to realize that this is problematic,” Clayton told Vanderbilt doctors, according to the report. “You are doing harm to another person and you are not paying the cost of your faith. I think that’s a… real problem.”

“I just want you to take home that saying that you won’t do something because of your conscience — because of your religious beliefs, is not and should not be without consequences,” she added. “And I just want to put that out there.”

“We’re given a tremendous amount — if you don’t want to do that kind of work, don’t work at Vanderbilt,” she said with clear implications.

Walsh and his team also reported that the hospital has a team of “trans buddies,” trans activists who meet patients who operate with a mandate to protect transgender people from anyone they consider “unsafe.” and ensure that hospital staff do not use incorrect genders in patients.

Lee told The Daily Wire in a statement, “The ‘Transgender Pediatric Clinic’ at Vanderbilt University Medical Center raises serious moral, ethical and legal concerns.

“We should not allow permanent, life-changing decisions that harm children or policies that suppress religious freedoms, all for the sole purpose of financial gain. We need to protect children in Tennessee and that warrants a thorough investigation,” he added.

Republican Rep. John Rose tweeted his support for an investigation into VUMC, writing, “What @MattWalshBlog has discovered at Vanderbilt is appalling. Children are permanently physically altered for financial reasons — it’s inexcusable. I stand behind @BillLeeTN and call for an investigation.”

Republican Rep. Chuck Fleischmann wrote: “The news uncovered by @MattWalshBlog is incredibly disheartening and totally unacceptable. Kids in Tennessee deserve better than what is happening at VUMC and I stand with Governor @BillLeeTN in demanding a thorough investigation.”

Craig Boerner, senior information officer at Vanderbilt University Medical Center, issued a statement to The Western Journal.

Boerner wrote, “Vanderbilt University Medical Center (VUMC) is now the subject of social media posts and a video misrepresenting facts about the care the Medical Center provides to transgender patients. VUMC created its Transgender Health Clinic because transgender people represent a high-risk population for mental and physical health problems and are consistently undeserved by the US health care system.”

The statement continued, “We have been, and continue to be, committed to providing all youth with family-centered care consistent with state law and consistent with standards of professional practice and guidance established by medical professional societies. VUMC requires parental consent to treat an underage patient to be seen for transgender care-related issues and never denies parental involvement in the care of transgender youth under the age of 18.”

“Our policies allow employees to refuse to participate in care they deem unethical and do not allow discrimination against employees who choose to do so. This includes employees whose personal or religious beliefs do not support gender-affirming mentoring for transgender people,” Boerner argued, adding, “The Trans Buddy program referenced in the video has received national recognition. Its purpose is to provide volunteer colleagues to support individuals seeking highly personalized care in an unfamiliar setting who may have a history of being denied medical services or who have avoided seeking them out for fear of hostility.”
