Gypsies and travellers flock to Appleby Horse Fair

Thousands of travelers have descended on Cumbria for the largest Gypsy Horse Fair in Europe.

Around 40,000 people are expected to attend the annual four-day event, which brings together members of the Gypsy, Roma and Traveler communities in the tiny town of Appleby-in-Westmorland.

The event dates back more than 250 years. It was canceled in 2020 due to Covid and was postponed to August last year due to the pandemic.

However, more than 10,000 travelers set up camp in the tiny town on Thursday for the first day of the fair.

Many chose to bathe their horses in the River Eden, which flows through the city. Gypsies and travellers flock to Appleby Horse Fair
